Policy Series Congressional Briefing
From Nets to Needles: Fighting the Spread of Dengue
Thurs., Sept. 18, 2008
9:30-11 am
Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room G11
Washington, D.C. 20036
Breakfast will be served
Approximately 2.5 billion people in more than 100 countries are at risk for contracting Dengue as a result of unprecedented population growth and unplanned urbanization, combined with increasing human migration and travel. Approximately 90 percent of patients with the most severe infections from this mosquito-borne disease are less than 15 years old. Currently, the only preventative measures available are individual mosquito protection or mosquito eradication programs, but that is about to change.
Join our panel of top experts in industry and government to learn about what is being done to combat this global disease. Speakers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and vaccine manufacturer, sanofi pasteur, will discuss what Dengue is, its impact on public health, and new measures on the horizon to prevent this infectious disease.
Speakers Include:
Dr. Jean Lang, Associate Vice President, R&D Travel/Endemic New Vaccines Program, sanofi pasteur
Dr. Otavio Oliva, Regional Advisor on Viral Diseases, Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)
Dr. Ron Rosenberg, Associate Director for Science, Division of Vector-Born Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
Moderator: Dr. Nicole Bates, Director, Government Relations, Global Health Council
