2008 Gates Award for Global Health Winner

Founded by Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy (“Dr. V”) in 1976, the Aravind system is much more than a group of eye hospitals. It includes community outreach activities, the Aravind Center for Women, Children and Community Health (ACWCCH), the Lions-Aravind Institute for Community Ophthalmology (LAICO), the Aravind Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology, the Aravind Medical Research Foundation, and Aurolab. The system provides an integrated approach to the provision of eye care services to a large population in southern India and has established a new model of financial self-sustainability.

2008 Jonathan Mann Award Winner

Dr. Binayak Sen, jailed Indian doctor and winner of the 2008 Jonathan Mann Award for Health and Human Rights, will be unable to attend today’s awards banquet. His wife, Dr. Ilina Sen, will be accepting the award on his behalf.

Dr. Binayak Sen of Chhattisgarh, India, a physician who has spent most of his career serving marginalized people in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh and who is an officer of the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), has been imprisoned in Raipur for more than a year as a result of allegations that he violated state antiterrorism laws. Sen denies committing any crime.
