Despite significant overall progress in decreasing mortality rates for children under age 5, each year millions of newborns and children die from preventable causes. Many of these needless deaths occur in Sub-Saharan Africa. We explored what obstacles remain that prevent expectant mothers and children from accessing effective interventions and health services, how African governments are addressing this issue, where progress is being made, and how successful programs can serve as models to other countries. An overview was given on the 2015 Countdown Initiative and speakers discussed lessons learned and ways forward to make sure that all African children have the healthy start needed to become productive, contributing adults.
Speakers Include:- The Honorable Amina Salum Ali, MBA, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the African Union
- Dr. Peter Salama MD, MPH, Chief of Health, UNICEF
- Susan Higman, Director, Research & Analysis, Global Health Council
