Washington, D.C. 20036
Neglected tropical diseases have afflicted humanity since time immemorial and, in their long histories, have acquired notoriety as disabling and deforming diseases. Today, those most affected are the poorest populations - often living in remote, rural areas, urban slums or in conflict zones.
Approximately 1 billion people suffer from one or more neglected tropical disease. These diseases have a low profile and status among public health priorities and there is a lack of reliable statistics. Dr. Lorenzo Savioli, director of the World Health Organization's Neglected and Tropical Disease Department joined us to discuss the current state of affairs regarding global neglected tropical diseases, progress made, continuing challenges and the road ahead to strengthen the global response to NTDs.
