WHO Renews Polio Immunisation Drive in Northern Nigeria

Nov. 13, 2008

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has decided to involve local chiefs in the fight against polio, which is on the rise in northern Nigeria, officials said.

"We have realised that we would have recorded tremendous success if local chiefs had spearheaded the polio campaign from the start because the people listen and trust them", Sani Gwarzo, an official with WHO told AFP.

Gwarzo said the new drive involves training traditional chiefs actively to participate in the polio immunisation campaign which started Thursday in Gezawa village, 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Kano.
