Council’s New CEO Cites Improvement in Collaborative Spirit in HIV/AIDS

June 12, 2009

Just five years ago, at an international AIDS conference in Bangkok, HIV/AIDS activists held loud protests in front of pharmaceutical companies' booths, demanding that the industry slash prices for drugs for AIDS patients and share information with companies that make generic copies of the drugs.

Just last month, I was named the new president and CEO of the Global Health Council, the world's largest membership alliance dedicated to saving lives by improving health around the globe. I'm a former executive at Merck & Co. in Whitehouse Station, one of the companies that drew such consternation in Bangkok.

This time, no one protested outside the council's annual meeting in Washington, D.C. In fact, one prominent AIDS activist said he "welcomed'' me to the advocacy community (though later noted that he hoped I would "distance'' myself from the pharmaceutical industry).
