Accordia Convenes Experts to Discuss Leadership Development at the Individual, Institutional, and Network Levels

July 2, 2009

On June 18, 2009, Accordia Global Health Foundation released its first report, Building Healthcare Leadership in Africa: A Call to Action, at a Washington, D.C. event. Both the report and a video of the release event are now available on Accordia's website.

The report considers the opportunities and challenges in scaling up and sustaining programs that have been implemented in the past two decades to fight the infectious disease epidemic in Africa. Building on presentations and discussions that took place at the 2009 Infectious Diseases Summit, which was held in Kampala, Uganda last April, the report examines the opportunity to build Africa's healthcare leadership at the individual, institutional, and network levels and offers a call to action for immediate steps to be taken to improve health outcomes for Africa's people.

The release event featured a summary of the report by two of its authors, followed by a panel discussion. To gain perspective on the report's findings, Accordia assembled representatives from the government, private, and non-profit sectors. The panelists discussed the report and the importance of supporting and developing leadership on the ground in Africa. Panelists included Dr. Jeff Sturchio, Chairman of the Corporate Council on Africa and incoming President and CEO of the Global Health Council; Joan Holloway, Senior Advisor, Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, State Department; Dr. Kate Tulenko, Health Specialist, World Bank; and Dr. Ernest Darkoh, Chairman, BroadReach Healthcare, LLC.

In his remarks, Dr. Darkoh spoke on the need for investment in training healthcare professionals, saying:

"The fact that Accordia is focusing on this particular issue of leadership and management, unpacking it, and beginning to ask these questions in the context of healthcare is really critical. If we're going to actually tackle these problems, this is one of the best places, where you'll get the most bang for your buck. Because, what you're doing is preparing, capacitating, and enabling the thinkers and problem-solvers who are actually going to think through and solve these problems for the long-term, as opposed to continuously thinking we are going to parachute in external experts ad nauseam to ultimately do the work... and carry the burden for the [local people]. To me, this issue, if we get it right, is the essence of giving African countries a hand up instead of a handout."
